As a kid, I watched an episode of Mad About You where Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt's characters were making soup or something-- they needed to save the liquid and get rid of whatever was solid in it, but they just poured the liquid into the sink... and down the drain.

As an adult, I think of that episode every time I make veg stock and I make sure that I have a bowl to catch my liquid.
